browser-extension-reverse

Helps your agent investigate browser extensions for security flaws. It's useful for analyzing how extensions work and if they expose sensitive information.

What it does

This tool helps investigate browser extensions (like those for Chrome or Firefox). It analyzes how they work internally, including their permissions, hidden code, and how they handle sensitive information like passwords.

When to use it

  • ✓When you suspect a browser extension might be malicious.
  • ✓To understand how a specific extension collects or uses your data.
  • ✓When analyzing extensions that seem to have excessive permissions.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Analyze this browser extension and tell me if it seems safe.”

Ready-to-paste message

Use this skill to help me: https://github.com/zhaoxuya520/reverse-skill/blob/main/skills/browser-extension-reverse/SKILL.md Read the SKILL.md file at that link and follow its instructions for my task.
How it works

The tool first unpacks the extension and reads its main configuration file (manifest). Then, it examines the code that runs in the background and how the extension interacts with websites and stores information.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add zhaoxuya520/reverse-skill --skill browser-extension-reverse

Or download just the file:

curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zhaoxuya520/reverse-skill/main/skills/browser-extension-reverse/SKILL.md -o SKILL.md

Browser Extension Reverse Engineering

ACTION REQUIRED(读完后立刻执行)

  1. NOW: 读取 ../field-journal/precedent-reverse.md
  2. NOW: 确认目标是浏览器扩展(crx/xpi/解压目录),不是普通网页 JS(普通 → js-reverse/)

  • Chrome/Edge MV2/MV3
  • Firefox

□ manifest.json:permissions、host_permissions、background、content_scripts

□ service_worker / background 入口
□ content_script 注入点与世界(isolated)
□ chrome.storage / IndexedDB 密钥

CDP(jshookmcp)

Chrome DevTools worker

  • references/extension-analysis.md
  • ../js-reverse/ ../malware-analysis/

  • Checklist?
FAQ

What is a 'manifest'?

It's a configuration file that tells the browser what permissions the extension needs and how it should operate.

What are 'excessive permissions'?

These are permissions an extension requests that go beyond what's necessary for its main function, which can be a security risk.

What are 'background workers' or 'service workers'?

These are parts of the extension's code that run in the background, even when you're not actively using the extension.

Details

Original description by the author

Use for authorized reverse engineering of browser extensions (Chrome/Firefox) including manifest analysis, background workers, and extension-based credential or traffic logic recovery.
