code-mate-hermes

Lets your agent perform local coding tasks. It's useful for delegating coding work when automatic tool approval is acceptable.

What it does

This AI agent, called Hermes, performs a single task you ask for and then stops. It's good for quick, well-defined jobs.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want the AI to do a specific task and then finish.
  • ✓If you already know the AI can do the job and trust it.
  • ✓For tasks that don't need much interaction or setup.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Hermes, write a summary of the last chapter of this book.”

How it works

It takes your instruction, performs the task quickly, and shows you the result. If something goes wrong or is missing, it will let you know.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

Hermes Agent

Run

  1. Set the Bash working directory to the smallest directory the user authorized and set a finite timeout, normally 10 minutes.
  2. Check availability with command -v hermes. If it is missing, stop and ask the user to install Hermes Agent in Code Mate.
  3. Run one task and exit:
hermes -z "<prompt>"

Pass the prompt as one quoted argument. Treat stdout as final text. Exit zero means success, exit one means failure or no response, and exit two means invalid arguments or an empty failed/partial result. Never start the interactive UI or a login flow.

Authentication And Permissions

If Hermes reports missing provider, model, or API configuration, stop and ask the user to configure Hermes Agent in Code Mate. Never request, read, print, or copy credentials.

One-shot mode automatically enables YOLO and hook acceptance and can load tools, memory, rules, and AGENTS.md. Do not run it in a writable project for read-only work. Use a disposable or read-only copy instead. Run it against the real project only when the user explicitly requests workspace changes, constrain the directory and prompt, and inspect the diff afterward.

Example: for an approved edit, ask Hermes to touch only named files, run it in that project, require exit zero, and inspect the resulting diff before reporting success.

FAQ

What is 'one-shot mode'?

It means Hermes runs just one task and then stops, without waiting for new instructions.

What happens if Hermes isn't installed?

It will tell you to install Hermes Agent in Code Mate.

Do I need to worry about my passwords?

No, Hermes never asks for, reads, or shows your credentials. It also shouldn't be used on important projects without caution.

Details

Original description by the author

Runs Hermes Agent in one-shot mode for bounded local tasks. Use when the user explicitly asks to delegate work to Hermes and accepts its automatic tool approval behavior.
