detecting-kerberoasting-attacks

Lets your agent detect Kerberoasting attacks by monitoring for anomalous Kerberos requests. Helps identify attempts to steal service account passwords in Active Directory.

What it does

This tool helps find attempts to steal passwords from service accounts in Active Directory. It looks for suspicious activity indicating someone is trying to discover passwords of accounts used by services.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want to actively hunt for password-robbing attacks.
  • ✓If you received an alert about attempts to crack service account passwords.
  • ✓When investigating a potential security compromise in your network.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Look for suspicious service account password-robbing activities.”

How it works

The tool monitors specific logs in Active Directory (Event ID 4769) that are used in password-robbing attacks. It searches for unusual patterns indicating an attacker is trying to obtain information to crack passwords offline.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

Detecting Kerberoasting Attacks

When to Use

  • When proactively hunting for indicators of detecting kerberoasting attacks in the environment
  • After threat intelligence indicates active campaigns using these techniques
  • During incident response to scope compromise related to these techniques
  • When EDR or SIEM alerts trigger on related indicators
  • During periodic security assessments and purple team exercises

Prerequisites

  • EDR platform with process and network telemetry (CrowdStrike, MDE, SentinelOne)
  • SIEM with relevant log data ingested (Splunk, Elastic, Sentinel)
  • Sysmon deployed with comprehensive configuration
  • Windows Security Event Log forwarding enabled
  • Threat intelligence feeds for IOC correlation

Workflow

  1. Formulate Hypothesis: Define a testable hypothesis based on threat intelligence or ATT&CK gap analysis.
  2. Identify Data Sources: Determine which logs and telemetry are needed to validate or refute the hypothesis.
  3. Execute Queries: Run detection queries against SIEM and EDR platforms to collect relevant events.
  4. Analyze Results: Examine query results for anomalies, correlating across multiple data sources.
  5. Validate Findings: Distinguish true positives from false positives through contextual analysis.
  6. Correlate Activity: Link findings to broader attack chains and threat actor TTPs.
  7. Document and Report: Record findings, update detection rules, and recommend response actions.

FAQ

What is Kerberoasting?

It's a type of attack where an attacker tries to obtain passwords of service accounts, which are used to run programs and services, to gain privileged access to the network.

What are SPNs?

SPNs (Service Principal Names) are unique identifiers for services using Kerberos authentication. Kerberoasting attacks target accounts that have SPNs.

What systems are needed?

You need a threat detection system (EDR), a log management system (SIEM), and Sysmon configured to collect the necessary data.

Details

Original description by the author

Detect Kerberoasting attacks by monitoring for anomalous Kerberos TGS requests (Event ID 4769) targeting service accounts with SPNs, which attackers request offline to crack service account passwords. Use when hunting for MITRE T1558 credential access activity or investigating suspected service account password cracking attempts in Active Directory Kerberos logs.
