detecting-mimikatz-execution-patterns

Has your agent detect Mimikatz execution for credential dumping. Analyzes command-line patterns and LSASS access to identify password theft activities.

What it does

This tool helps find signs that a program called Mimikatz has been used on a computer. It looks for specific command patterns, unusual access to sensitive system areas, and known parts of the Mimikatz program.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want to actively search for Mimikatz signs in your environment.
  • ✓If you received a security alert about access to sensitive system areas.
  • ✓During a security investigation to understand what happened.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Search for suspicious activities that might indicate Mimikatz usage.”

How it works

The tool compares what's happening on the computer with known patterns of how Mimikatz works. It checks commands, how programs access memory, and if parts of Mimikatz are present.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill detecting-mimikatz-execution-patterns

Or download just the file:

Detecting Mimikatz Execution Patterns

When to Use

  • When proactively hunting for indicators of detecting mimikatz execution patterns in the environment
  • After threat intelligence indicates active campaigns using these techniques
  • During incident response to scope compromise related to these techniques
  • When EDR or SIEM alerts trigger on related indicators
  • During periodic security assessments and purple team exercises

Prerequisites

  • EDR platform with process and network telemetry (CrowdStrike, MDE, SentinelOne)
  • SIEM with relevant log data ingested (Splunk, Elastic, Sentinel)
  • Sysmon deployed with comprehensive configuration
  • Windows Security Event Log forwarding enabled
  • Threat intelligence feeds for IOC correlation

Workflow

  1. Formulate Hypothesis: Define a testable hypothesis based on threat intelligence or ATT&CK gap analysis.
  2. Identify Data Sources: Determine which logs and telemetry are needed to validate or refute the hypothesis.
  3. Execute Queries: Run detection queries against SIEM and EDR platforms to collect relevant events.
  4. Analyze Results: Examine query results for anomalies, correlating across multiple data sources.
  5. Validate Findings: Distinguish true positives from false positives through contextual analysis.
  6. Correlate Activity: Link findings to broader attack chains and threat actor TTPs.
  7. Document and Report: Record findings, update detection rules, and recommend response actions.

FAQ

What is Mimikatz?

Mimikatz is a tool that can be used to extract passwords and other security information from a computer. It can be used by administrators, but also by malicious actors.

What are 'command-line patterns'?

These are specific sequences of text that people type to make Mimikatz work. The tool looks for these exact sequences.

What is 'LSASS'?

LSASS is an important Windows process that manages security, including passwords. Unusual access to LSASS can be a sign that someone is trying to steal passwords.

Details

Original description by the author

Detect Mimikatz credential-dumping activity via command-line pattern matching, LSASS access signatures, binary/hash indicators, and in-memory detection of known Mimikatz modules. Use when threat hunting for T1003 credential access, triaging EDR/SIEM alerts on LSASS access, scoping compromise during incident response, or validating detection coverage in a purple team exercise.
