detecting-pass-the-hash-attacks

Lets your agent detect Pass-the-Hash attacks by analyzing NTLM authentication patterns. Flags Type 3 logons using NTLM where Kerberos would be expected.

What it does

This tool helps find attacks that use stolen passwords to move around the network. It looks for suspicious login patterns that suggest someone might be using a stolen password.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want to actively search for stolen password attacks.
  • ✓When there's news of active campaigns using these techniques.
  • ✓During a security incident investigation to understand the attack's scope.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Search for suspicious login activity using stolen passwords.”

How it works

It analyzes Windows authentication logs, looking for logins using an older method (NTLM) where a newer method (Kerberos) would be expected. It also checks for other signs of credential theft.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

Detecting Pass The Hash Attacks

When to Use

  • When proactively hunting for indicators of detecting pass the hash attacks in the environment
  • After threat intelligence indicates active campaigns using these techniques
  • During incident response to scope compromise related to these techniques
  • When EDR or SIEM alerts trigger on related indicators
  • During periodic security assessments and purple team exercises

Prerequisites

  • EDR platform with process and network telemetry (CrowdStrike, MDE, SentinelOne)
  • SIEM with relevant log data ingested (Splunk, Elastic, Sentinel)
  • Sysmon deployed with comprehensive configuration
  • Windows Security Event Log forwarding enabled
  • Threat intelligence feeds for IOC correlation

Workflow

  1. Formulate Hypothesis: Define a testable hypothesis based on threat intelligence or ATT&CK gap analysis.
  2. Identify Data Sources: Determine which logs and telemetry are needed to validate or refute the hypothesis.
  3. Execute Queries: Run detection queries against SIEM and EDR platforms to collect relevant events.
  4. Analyze Results: Examine query results for anomalies, correlating across multiple data sources.
  5. Validate Findings: Distinguish true positives from false positives through contextual analysis.
  6. Correlate Activity: Link findings to broader attack chains and threat actor TTPs.
  7. Document and Report: Record findings, update detection rules, and recommend response actions.

FAQ

What is 'Pass-the-Hash'?

It's an attack technique where an attacker uses a hash (an encoded version) of a password to authenticate to other systems, without needing to know the actual password.

What systems are needed?

You need tools that collect information about what's happening on computers (EDR) and where events are logged (SIEM), plus specific Windows configurations (Sysmon).

What are T1550.002 and T1550.003?

These are codes that identify specific attack techniques. T1550.002 is 'Pass the Hash' and T1550.003 is 'Pass the Ticket', both related to credential misuse.
