detecting-privilege-escalation-attempts

Lets your agent detect privilege escalation attempts on Windows and Linux. Identifies token manipulation, UAC bypass, and kernel exploits.

What it does

This tool helps find attempts by attackers to gain more control on Windows and Linux computers. It looks for common methods they use to steal credentials or run commands with higher privileges.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want to actively search for attackers trying to gain more control.
  • ✓After receiving a security alert about suspicious activity.
  • ✓During an investigation to understand how deep an attacker has penetrated the system.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Search for privilege escalation attempts in my environment.”

How it works

The tool compares your computer's security data (like logs and process information) against known attack patterns. If it finds something suspicious, it alerts you.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill detecting-privilege-escalation-attempts

Or download just the file:

Detecting Privilege Escalation Attempts

When to Use

  • When proactively hunting for indicators of detecting privilege escalation attempts in the environment
  • After threat intelligence indicates active campaigns using these techniques
  • During incident response to scope compromise related to these techniques
  • When EDR or SIEM alerts trigger on related indicators
  • During periodic security assessments and purple team exercises

Prerequisites

  • EDR platform with process and network telemetry (CrowdStrike, MDE, SentinelOne)
  • SIEM with relevant log data ingested (Splunk, Elastic, Sentinel)
  • Sysmon deployed with comprehensive configuration
  • Windows Security Event Log forwarding enabled
  • Threat intelligence feeds for IOC correlation

Workflow

  1. Formulate Hypothesis: Define a testable hypothesis based on threat intelligence or ATT&CK gap analysis.
  2. Identify Data Sources: Determine which logs and telemetry are needed to validate or refute the hypothesis.
  3. Execute Queries: Run detection queries against SIEM and EDR platforms to collect relevant events.
  4. Analyze Results: Examine query results for anomalies, correlating across multiple data sources.
  5. Validate Findings: Distinguish true positives from false positives through contextual analysis.
  6. Correlate Activity: Link findings to broader attack chains and threat actor TTPs.
  7. Document and Report: Record findings, update detection rules, and recommend response actions.

FAQ

What types of attacks does this tool detect?

It detects attacks like access token manipulation, UAC bypass, unquoted service path abuse, kernel exploits, and sudo/doas abuse.

Do I need to install anything to use this tool?

Yes, you need to have a security system (EDR) and a log analysis system (SIEM) set up, along with tools like Sysmon to collect the necessary data.

What is 'privilege escalation'?

It's when an attacker, who has already entered a system with limited permissions, finds a way to get higher permissions (like administrator) to gain more control and access to information.

Details

Original description by the author

Detect privilege escalation attempts across Windows and Linux, including access token manipulation, UAC bypass, unquoted service path abuse, kernel exploits, and sudo/doas abuse. Use when threat hunting for T1068-style privilege escalation, triaging EDR/SIEM alerts on suspicious privilege changes, scoping compromise during incident response, or validating detection coverage in a purple team exerci
