hunting-credential-stuffing-attacks

Helps your agent identify 'credential stuffing' attacks, where criminals try to use stolen passwords on various sites. Useful for protecting user accounts against unauthorized access.

What it does

This tool helps find attempts to break into accounts using stolen passwords. It analyzes login records to identify suspicious patterns, like many failed login attempts from different places or with common passwords.

When to use it

  • ✓When you suspect accounts have been compromised.
  • ✓When creating rules to detect credential stuffing attacks.
  • ✓To investigate account takeover campaigns.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Look for credential stuffing attacks in the login logs.”

How it works

The tool examines authentication logs for anomalies. It checks if many different IP addresses are trying to access a few accounts, if passwords are the same across multiple attacks, or if logins come from geographically impossible locations.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

Hunting Credential Stuffing Attacks

When to Use

  • When investigating security incidents that require hunting credential stuffing attacks
  • When building detection rules or threat hunting queries for this domain
  • When SOC analysts need structured procedures for this analysis type
  • When validating security monitoring coverage for related attack techniques

Prerequisites

  • Familiarity with security operations concepts and tools
  • Access to a test or lab environment for safe execution
  • Python 3.8+ with required dependencies installed
  • Appropriate authorization for any testing activities

Instructions

Analyze authentication logs to detect credential stuffing by identifying patterns of distributed login failures, high IP diversity, and suspicious ASN distribution.

import pandas as pd
from collections import Counter

# Load auth logs
df = pd.read_csv("auth_logs.csv", parse_dates=["timestamp"])

# Credential stuffing indicator: many IPs trying few accounts
ip_per_account = df[df["status"] == "failed"].groupby("username")["source_ip"].nunique()
accounts_under_attack = ip_per_account[ip_per_account > 50]

Key detection indicators:

  1. High unique source IPs per failed username
  2. Low success rate across many accounts (< 1%)
  3. ASN concentration from cloud/proxy providers
  4. Geographic impossibility (same account, distant locations)
  5. User-agent uniformity across distributed IPs

Examples

# Password spray: one password tried across many accounts
spray = df[df["status"] == "failed"].groupby(["source_ip", "password_hash"]).agg(
    accounts=("username", "nunique")).reset_index()
sprays = spray[spray["accounts"] > 10]
FAQ

What is 'credential stuffing'?

It's a type of attack where hackers use lists of usernames and passwords stolen from one website to try and access accounts on other sites, hoping people reuse their passwords.

What are 'ASNs'?

ASN stands for 'Autonomous System', which is a group of computer networks. The tool checks if many suspicious logins are coming from cloud providers or proxies, which are often used by attackers.

Do I need to be a programming expert to use this?

No, the tool is designed for security analysts. While it requires access to logs and some familiarity with security concepts, you don't need to be an experienced programmer.

Details

Original description by the author

Detects credential stuffing attacks by analyzing authentication logs for login velocity anomalies, ASN diversity, password spray patterns, and geographic distribution of failed logins. Uses statistical analysis on Splunk or raw log data. Use when investigating account takeover campaigns or building detection rules for auth abuse. '
