hunting-for-living-off-the-cloud-techniques

Lets your agent hunt for abuse of legitimate cloud services. It's useful for detecting command and control channels or data exfiltration hidden in the cloud.

What it does

This tool helps search for suspicious activities that use legitimate cloud services (like Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) to hide malicious actions, such as receiving commands or stealing data. It disguises itself as normal cloud activity.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want to actively search for these hidden techniques.
  • ✓If there's news of attacks using these methods.
  • ✓During a security investigation to understand what was affected.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Search for unusual activity in AWS accounts that might indicate data theft.”

How it works

It works by analyzing activity logs from the cloud and computers. By comparing these logs with known attack patterns, it identifies behaviors that look normal but are actually malicious.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill hunting-for-living-off-the-cloud-techniques

Or download just the file:

Hunting For Living Off The Cloud Techniques

When to Use

  • When proactively hunting for indicators of hunting for living off the cloud techniques in the environment
  • After threat intelligence indicates active campaigns using these techniques
  • During incident response to scope compromise related to these techniques
  • When EDR or SIEM alerts trigger on related indicators
  • During periodic security assessments and purple team exercises

Prerequisites

  • EDR platform with process and network telemetry (CrowdStrike, MDE, SentinelOne)
  • SIEM with relevant log data ingested (Splunk, Elastic, Sentinel)
  • Sysmon deployed with comprehensive configuration
  • Windows Security Event Log forwarding enabled
  • Threat intelligence feeds for IOC correlation

Workflow

  1. Formulate Hypothesis: Define a testable hypothesis based on threat intelligence or ATT&CK gap analysis.
  2. Identify Data Sources: Determine which logs and telemetry are needed to validate or refute the hypothesis.
  3. Execute Queries: Run detection queries against SIEM and EDR platforms to collect relevant events.
  4. Analyze Results: Examine query results for anomalies, correlating across multiple data sources.
  5. Validate Findings: Distinguish true positives from false positives through contextual analysis.
  6. Correlate Activity: Link findings to broader attack chains and threat actor TTPs.
  7. Document and Report: Record findings, update detection rules, and recommend response actions.

FAQ

What does 'living off the cloud' mean?

It means criminals are using cloud services that companies already use normally (like storage or collaboration platforms) to carry out attacks, making them harder to detect.

Which cloud services are monitored?

Major cloud services like Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud, as well as other Software as a Service (SaaS) platforms.

Do I need to be a cloud expert to use this?

No, the tool is designed to help identify these threats, even if you are not an expert in all the technical details of the cloud.

Details

Original description by the author

Hunts for adversary abuse of legitimate cloud services (Azure, AWS, GCP, and SaaS platforms) for command-and-control, data staging, and exfiltration, i.e. "living off the cloud" tradecraft that blends in with normal cloud API and service activity. Use when threat hunting for cloud-native C2 channels, abnormal use of storage/SaaS services for data staging, or exfiltration hidden in legitimate cloud
