hunting-for-registry-persistence-mechanisms

Helps your agent find programs that start automatically via the Windows registry. It's useful for detecting and removing hidden malicious software.

What it does

This tool looks for ways malicious programs can install themselves on your computer to start automatically when it boots up. It checks specific locations in the Windows registry where these installations often occur.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want to check for hidden spyware or malware.
  • ✓If you received a security alert about suspicious activity.
  • ✓During a routine security check of your system.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Search for programs that auto-start in the Windows registry.”

How it works

The tool examines specific Windows registry keys, like 'Run' and 'Winlogon' keys, which programs use to start without you noticing. It looks for suspicious entries that might indicate a malicious installation.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill hunting-for-registry-persistence-mechanisms

Hunting For Registry Persistence Mechanisms

When to Use

  • When proactively hunting for indicators of hunting for registry persistence mechanisms in the environment
  • After threat intelligence indicates active campaigns using these techniques
  • During incident response to scope compromise related to these techniques
  • When EDR or SIEM alerts trigger on related indicators
  • During periodic security assessments and purple team exercises

Prerequisites

  • EDR platform with process and network telemetry (CrowdStrike, MDE, SentinelOne)
  • SIEM with relevant log data ingested (Splunk, Elastic, Sentinel)
  • Sysmon deployed with comprehensive configuration
  • Windows Security Event Log forwarding enabled
  • Threat intelligence feeds for IOC correlation

Workflow

  1. Formulate Hypothesis: Define a testable hypothesis based on threat intelligence or ATT&CK gap analysis.
  2. Identify Data Sources: Determine which logs and telemetry are needed to validate or refute the hypothesis.
  3. Execute Queries: Run detection queries against SIEM and EDR platforms to collect relevant events.
  4. Analyze Results: Examine query results for anomalies, correlating across multiple data sources.
  5. Validate Findings: Distinguish true positives from false positives through contextual analysis.
  6. Correlate Activity: Link findings to broader attack chains and threat actor TTPs.
  7. Document and Report: Record findings, update detection rules, and recommend response actions.

FAQ

What is the Windows registry?

It's a database where Windows and programs store important settings. Some settings allow programs to start on their own.

What are 'persistence mechanisms'?

These are tricks that malicious programs use to ensure they keep running or starting even after the computer is restarted.

Do I need to install anything to use this tool?

The description mentions it needs access to security tools like EDR and SIEM, which are usually already installed in corporate environments for monitoring.

Details

Original description by the author

Hunts for registry-based persistence mechanisms (MITRE T1547) in Windows environments, including Run/RunOnce keys, Winlogon Shell/Userinit modifications, Image File Execution Options (IFEO) debugger injection, and COM hijacking via CLSID overrides. Use when auditing the registry for persistence artifacts or building detections for registry-based malware autostart techniques.
