hunting-for-shadow-copy-deletion

Lets your agent detect when system backups are deleted. It helps identify ransomware activity and attempts to erase tracks.

What it does

This tool searches for signs that an attacker is trying to delete backup copies of your system (called 'Volume Shadow Copies'). This is often done by malicious programs like ransomware to make it harder to recover your files.

When to use it

  • ✓When you suspect someone is preparing for a ransomware attack.
  • ✓After receiving warnings about ongoing dangerous activities.
  • ✓When security alerts indicate that commands to delete backup copies have been executed.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Look for suspicious activities related to the deletion of Windows shadow copies.”

How it works

The tool checks your system's logs (SIEM/EDR) for specific commands used to delete these copies. It analyzes these logs to find evidence that this action has been performed.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

Hunting For Shadow Copy Deletion

When to Use

  • When proactively hunting for indicators of hunting for shadow copy deletion in the environment
  • After threat intelligence indicates active campaigns using these techniques
  • During incident response to scope compromise related to these techniques
  • When EDR or SIEM alerts trigger on related indicators
  • During periodic security assessments and purple team exercises

Prerequisites

  • EDR platform with process and network telemetry (CrowdStrike, MDE, SentinelOne)
  • SIEM with relevant log data ingested (Splunk, Elastic, Sentinel)
  • Sysmon deployed with comprehensive configuration
  • Windows Security Event Log forwarding enabled
  • Threat intelligence feeds for IOC correlation

Workflow

  1. Formulate Hypothesis: Define a testable hypothesis based on threat intelligence or ATT&CK gap analysis.
  2. Identify Data Sources: Determine which logs and telemetry are needed to validate or refute the hypothesis.
  3. Execute Queries: Run detection queries against SIEM and EDR platforms to collect relevant events.
  4. Analyze Results: Examine query results for anomalies, correlating across multiple data sources.
  5. Validate Findings: Distinguish true positives from false positives through contextual analysis.
  6. Correlate Activity: Link findings to broader attack chains and threat actor TTPs.
  7. Document and Report: Record findings, update detection rules, and recommend response actions.

FAQ

What are 'Volume Shadow Copies'?

These are automatic backup copies of files created by Windows. They allow you to restore previous versions of files or folders.

Why would an attacker delete shadow copies?

To prevent you from restoring your files if they are encrypted (ransomware) or destroyed, making recovery more difficult.

Do I need to install anything to use this tool?

The tool works with security systems you likely already have, such as EDR (CrowdStrike, MDE) and SIEM (Splunk, Elastic), and requires certain Windows logs to be enabled.

Details

Original description by the author

Runs a hypothesis-driven threat hunt for Volume Shadow Copy deletion (T1490) by querying SIEM/EDR telemetry for vssadmin, wmic shadowcopy, and PowerShell shadow-copy-deletion commands. Use when hunting for ransomware preparation or anti-forensics activity, after threat intel flags active campaigns, or when alerts trigger on shadow-copy deletion commands.
