implementing-network-traffic-analysis-with-arkime
Helps your agent analyze recorded network traffic to investigate suspicious activities and find evidence of attacks.
What it does
This tool helps investigate suspicious network traffic using Arkime. It can search for specific activities, download data for analysis, and identify malicious behaviors like communication with dangerous servers or hidden traffic.
When to use it
- ✓When you suspect unusual activity on your network.
- ✓When analyzing network traffic data for security investigations.
- ✓To check for communication with websites or servers known to be dangerous.
Example of what to ask your AI
“Search for suspicious connections coming from IP 192.168.1.100 and tell me if any of them look like command and control traffic.”

How to use
The easiest way: copy the message below and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any AI. It reads the skill and follows the instructions.

How it works
The tool connects to Arkime, which records all network traffic. It then uses scripts to look for unusual patterns, like irregular connection times or suspicious domain names, and generates a report.
Installation
Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.
In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

Implementing Network Traffic Analysis with Arkime
When to Use
- When deploying or configuring implementing network traffic analysis with arkime capabilities in your environment
- When establishing security controls aligned to compliance requirements
- When building or improving security architecture for this domain
- When conducting security assessments that require this implementation
Prerequisites
- Familiarity with network security concepts and tools
- Access to a test or lab environment for safe execution
- Python 3.8+ with required dependencies installed
- Appropriate authorization for any testing activities
Instructions
- Install dependencies:
pip install requests - Configure Arkime viewer URL and credentials.
- Run the agent to query Arkime sessions and analyze traffic:
- Search sessions by IP, port, protocol, or expression
- Download PCAP data for forensic analysis
- Detect C2 beaconing via connection interval analysis
- Identify DNS tunneling through query length statistics
- Flag connections to known-bad TLS certificate issuers
python scripts/agent.py --arkime-url https://arkime.local:8005 --user admin --password secret --output arkime_report.json
Examples
Beaconing Detection
Source: 10.1.2.50 -> 185.220.101.34:443
Sessions: 288 over 24 hours
Avg interval: 300s, Jitter: 4.2%
Verdict: HIGH confidence C2 beaconing (jitter < 5%)
FAQ
What is Arkime?
Arkime (formerly Moloch) is a system that records all network traffic so it can be analyzed later.
What are 'C2 beaconing' and 'DNS tunneling'?
'C2 beaconing' is when an infected computer regularly communicates with a control server. 'DNS tunneling' is a way to hide data within normal DNS requests.
Do I need to know how to code to use this?
No, you just need to know how to ask the AI to analyze network traffic. The tool does the technical work behind the scenes.
Details
Original description by the author
Queries Arkime (formerly Moloch) full packet capture via its API to search sessions, download PCAPs, detect C2 beaconing through connection interval/jitter stats, spot DNS tunneling via query-length analysis, and flag known-bad TLS certificate issuers, using the bundled scripts/agent.py. Use when investigating suspicious network flows or doing full-packet-capture forensics against an Arkime deploy
