api-documentation

Makes your agent manage API documentation. It creates specifications and guides so the documentation is always complete and up-to-date.

What it does

This tool helps create all the documentation for an API (an interface that allows different software to communicate). This includes technical specifications, developer guides, and code examples.

When to use it

  • ✓When you are creating API documentation for the first time.
  • ✓When you need to generate a technical specification file (OpenAPI/Swagger).
  • ✓To write a guide that teaches other developers how to use your API.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Create complete documentation for my user API, including the OpenAPI specification, a developer guide, and code examples.”

How it works

The tool organizes the work into steps, such as discovering API details, creating the technical specification, writing the guide, adding examples, and setting up interactive viewing.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill api-documentation

Or download just the file:

curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills/main/plugins/agentic-awesome-skills-claude/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md -o SKILL.md

API Documentation Workflow

Overview

Specialized workflow for creating comprehensive API documentation including OpenAPI/Swagger specs, developer guides, code examples, and interactive documentation.

When to Use This Workflow

Use this workflow when:

  • Creating API documentation
  • Generating OpenAPI specs
  • Writing developer guides
  • Adding code examples
  • Setting up API portals

Scope and execution

Choose the phases that match the user’s task; this document is an index, not an instruction to run every listed skill. Read a selected skill before using it. Respect repository and user constraints. Cloud calls, host configuration, publishing, destructive operations and spending require the applicable authorization; a workflow checklist does not grant it.

Base the contract on the actual implementation/specification and keep secrets out of examples. “Try it” can send real requests: use explicit sandbox endpoints and test credentials. Preview documentation locally before publishing; deployment is a separate authorized action.

Limitations

  • Use this skill only when the task clearly matches the scope described above.
  • Do not treat the output as a substitute for environment-specific validation, testing, or expert review.
  • Stop and ask for clarification if required inputs, permissions, safety boundaries, or success criteria are missing.
FAQ

What is an API?

An API is like a menu at a restaurant. It tells you what dishes (functions) are available and how to order them (use the function), without you needing to know how the kitchen (the software) works internally.

What is OpenAPI/Swagger?

It's a standard format for describing APIs. Think of it as a technical 'instruction manual' that other tools can read to understand and interact with your API.

Can I use this to document any software?

This tool is specifically focused on API documentation. For other types of software, you might need to use different tools.
