aws-rds
Lets your agent manage databases on AWS. It configures and maintains relational databases (RDS) with security and backups.
What it does
This tool helps create and manage relational databases in Amazon's cloud (AWS RDS). It allows you to configure automatic backups, copies to other locations (replication), and security measures.
When to use it
- ✓When you need a reliable database for your application.
- ✓To ensure your data is automatically saved and can be recovered.
- ✓If you need copies of your database to increase read speed or for disaster recovery.
Example of what to ask your AI
“Create a PostgreSQL database for my web application with daily backups and high availability.”

How it works
You provide details about the type of database you want, and the tool uses specific AWS commands to set everything up. It handles creation, security, and maintenance.
Installation
Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.
In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

AWS RDS
Deploy and manage Amazon RDS relational databases with production-grade backups, replication, monitoring, and security.
When to Use This Skill
- Provisioning a managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, or SQL Server database
- Setting up Multi-AZ deployments for high availability
- Creating read replicas for horizontal read scaling
- Configuring automated backups, snapshots, and point-in-time recovery
- Tuning database parameters for performance
- Migrating from self-managed databases to RDS
- Monitoring database performance and setting up alarms
Prerequisites
- AWS CLI v2 installed and configured
- IAM permissions:
rds:*,ec2:DescribeSecurityGroups,ec2:DescribeSubnets,kms:*,cloudwatch:* - A VPC with at least two subnets in different AZs (for subnet group)
- Security group allowing database port access from application subnets only
Create a DB Subnet Group
# Create a subnet group spanning two AZs
aws rds create-db-subnet-group \
--db-subnet-group-name production-db-subnets \
--db-subnet-group-description "Production database subnets" \
--subnet-ids subnet-private-a subnet-private-b
# List subnet groups
aws rds describe-db-subnet-groups \
--query "DBSubnetGroups[].{Name:DBSubnetGroupName,VPC:VpcId,Status:SubnetGroupStatus}" \
--output table
Create a Production Database
# Create a PostgreSQL 16 Multi-AZ instance
aws rds create-db-instance \
--db-instance-identifier production-api-db \

FAQ
What is a relational database?
It's a type of database that organizes data into tables, like a spreadsheet, with rows and columns, making it easier to query and relate information.
What does 'high availability' mean?
It means the database is set up so that if one part fails, another automatically takes over, minimizing downtime and ensuring your application keeps running.
What are 'read replicas'?
These are copies of your main database used to handle read queries. This helps avoid overloading the main database and makes reads faster.
