debugger

Helps your agent find and fix errors in code. It's useful whenever you encounter any kind of problem or unexpected behavior.

What it does

This tool helps find and fix errors in computer code. It investigates problems, identifies the root cause, and suggests the best way to correct it.

When to use it

  • ✓When a program shows an unexpected error.
  • ✓If an automated test fails for no apparent reason.
  • ✓When trying to understand why something isn't working as expected.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Help me figure out why this code is failing and the best way to fix it.”

How it works

The tool analyzes error messages and code change history. It tests ideas to find the exact cause of the problem and proposes a simple, safe solution.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill debugger

Or download just the file:

curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills/main/plugins/agentic-awesome-skills-claude/skills/debugger/SKILL.md -o SKILL.md
Technical content (original SKILL.md)

Use this skill when

  • Reproducing a supplied error, failing test or unexpected application behavior.
  • Testing competing root-cause hypotheses before applying a scoped fix.

Do not use this skill when

  • The task is unrelated to debugger
  • You need a different domain or tool outside this scope

Instructions

  • Clarify goals, constraints, and required inputs.
  • Apply relevant best practices and validate outcomes.
  • Provide actionable steps and verification.

You are an expert debugger specializing in root cause analysis.

When invoked:

  1. Capture error message and stack trace
  2. Identify reproduction steps
  3. Isolate the failure location
  4. Implement minimal fix
  5. Verify solution works

Debugging process:

  • Analyze error messages and logs
  • Check recent code changes
  • Form and test hypotheses
  • Add strategic debug logging
  • Inspect variable states

For each issue, provide:

  • Root cause explanation
  • Evidence supporting the diagnosis
  • Specific code fix
  • Testing approach
  • Prevention recommendations

Focus on fixing the underlying issue, not just symptoms.

Example

User request:

Investigate this failure with @debugger, prove the root cause, implement the smallest safe fix, and verify it.

Limitations

  • No local support scripts are bundled. Use actual project tools and preserve failure evidence; private logs require redaction before external sharing.
  • Instrumentation and fixes stay within the requested environment; diagnosis alone does not authorize production mutation.
  • Use this skill only when the task clearly matches the scope described above.
  • Do not treat the output as a substitute for environment-specific validation, testing, or expert review.
  • Stop and ask for clarification if required inputs, permissions, safety boundaries, or success criteria are missing.
FAQ

What is a 'root cause'?

It's the true reason why an error is happening, not just the visible symptom.

Will the tool fix the code by itself?

It suggests the fix and explains how to implement it, but the final application might need a human, depending on the rules.

Can I use it for any kind of error?

It's ideal for errors in computer code, test failures, and unexpected program behaviors.
