debugging-strategies

Helps your agent find and fix errors in code. It uses methods and tools to solve problems in an organized way.

What it does

This skill helps you find and fix errors in computer programs in an organized way. It turns bug hunting, which can be frustrating, into a logical and methodical process.

When to use it

  • ✓When a mysterious error appears and you don't know where to start.
  • ✓If a program is running slowly and you need to find out why.
  • ✓To analyze failures that happened in a live environment (production).

Example of what to ask your AI

“Help me find the bug in this code that is crashing.”

Ready-to-paste message

Use this skill to help me: https://github.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills/blob/main/plugins/agentic-awesome-skills-claude/skills/debugging-strategies/SKILL.md Read the SKILL.md file at that link and follow its instructions for my task.
How it works

It works by asking you to reproduce the error, collect information like logs, and then suggests ways to test hypotheses and isolate the problem. The goal is to go from general to specific until the cause is found.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill debugging-strategies

Or download just the file:

curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills/main/plugins/agentic-awesome-skills-claude/skills/debugging-strategies/SKILL.md -o SKILL.md

Debugging Strategies

Transform debugging from frustrating guesswork into systematic problem-solving with proven strategies, powerful tools, and methodical approaches.

Use this skill when

  • Tracking down elusive bugs
  • Investigating performance issues
  • Debugging production incidents
  • Analyzing crash dumps or stack traces
  • Debugging distributed systems

Do not use this skill when

  • There is no reproducible issue or observable symptom
  • The task is purely feature development
  • You cannot access logs, traces, or runtime signals

Instructions

  • Reproduce the issue and capture logs, traces, and environment details.
  • Form hypotheses and design controlled experiments.
  • Narrow scope with binary search and targeted instrumentation.
  • Document findings and verify the fix.
  • If detailed playbooks are required, open resources/implementation-playbook.md.

Resources

  • resources/implementation-playbook.md for detailed debugging patterns and checklists.

Limitations

  • Use this skill only when the task clearly matches the scope described above.
  • Do not treat the output as a substitute for environment-specific validation, testing, or expert review.
  • Stop and ask for clarification if required inputs, permissions, safety boundaries, or success criteria are missing.
FAQ

What are 'logs' and 'traces'?

Logs are records of events that happened in the program. Traces show the path the program took to reach a specific point, helping to understand the sequence of actions.

When should I NOT use this skill?

Don't use it if there's no clear problem to investigate, if you're just developing new features, or if you don't have access to important information like logs.

What is 'binary search' in debugging?

It's a technique to find a bug by repeatedly dividing the problem in half. For example, if you have 100 lines of code with a bug, you test in the middle (line 50) to see if the bug is in the first or second half, and keep dividing until you find the exact line.
