markstream-custom-components
Lets your agent customize how Markstream displays content across different web technologies. It allows using custom components for a unique look.
What it does
This tool lets you customize how certain elements appear in a formatted text document (like an article or post). You can change how things like images, links, or code blocks look, or add your own special elements.
When to use it
- ✓When you want to change the default look of images or links.
- ✓To create a new type of block, like a 'thinking' block.
- ✓When you need these custom elements to work only in a specific part of your site or app.
Example of what to ask your AI
“How can I make code blocks appear with a different background color?”

How to use
The easiest way: copy the message below and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any AI. It reads the skill and follows the instructions.

How it works
You tell the tool which elements you want to change and how they should be displayed. It then uses these instructions to render the text, applying your customizations instead of the default rules.
Installation
Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.
In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

Markstream Custom Components
Overview
Customize specific Markstream nodes or trusted custom tags without replacing the parser or leaking global renderer state. Read references/patterns.md first.
When to Use
Use to replace built-ins such as image, link, code_block, mermaid, or inline_code; render trusted tags such as thinking; or scope overrides to one renderer or app. Use parser transforms only when token or AST reshaping is required.
Workflow
Before changing dependencies or source files, inspect the existing package manager and project conventions, preview the intended edits, and obtain explicit user approval.
- Classify the change as a built-in override, trusted tag, or parser transform.
- Prefer scoped mappings. Vue, Vue 2, Svelte, and Angular can use
setCustomComponents(customId, mapping); Svelte and Angular can also pass renderer-local maps. - In React, prefer
streamingComponentsfor parser-backed nodes andhtmlComponentsfor sanitized attributes plus children. - Start with leaf nodes before containers that must preserve children.
- For trusted tag bodies containing Markdown, use a nested renderer with the same allowlist. Do not add a second smooth-streaming loop.
- Preserve node/loading props, identity keys, scope IDs, theme state, and preview-height estimates for async diagrams.
- Remove temporary scoped registrations on cleanup and validate repeated and nested tags.
Example
import MarkdownRender, {
type NodeComponentProps,
setCustomComponents,
} from 'markstream-react'
import 'markstream-react/index.css'
function ThinkingNode({ node }: NodeComponentProps<any>) {
return <details><summary>Thinking</summary>{node.content}</details>
}
setCustomComponents('assistant-panel', { thinking: ThinkingNode })
export function Answer({ markdown }: { markdown: string }) {
return (
<MarkdownRender
content={markdown}
customId="assistant-panel"
customHtmlTags={['thinking']}
htmlPolicy="safe"
/>
)
}
Limitations
- Component overrides cannot reproduce arbitrary remark/rehype transforms.
- Container overrides require careful child rendering and accessibility review.
- Framework registration APIs are not interchangeable.
Security & Safety Notes
Treat custom HTML-like tags as trusted input only. Keep safe HTML enabled and do not pass unsanitized attributes into host components.
FAQ
Can I change anything?
You can change standard elements like images and links, or add new trusted elements. However, you cannot redo all complex formatting transformations.
Is it safe to use custom elements?
Yes, as long as you treat these elements as trusted and don't insert unverified information into them. It's important to keep security settings enabled.
How does this work with different web technologies (Vue, React, etc.)?
The tool provides specific ways to set up these customizations for each technology, ensuring they work correctly in each environment.
Details
Original description by the author
