mem-search

Lets your agent search past memories. Useful for recalling previous solutions or work from old sessions.

What it does

This tool helps the AI remember past conversations and work. It can search its memories to find information about what has already been done or how something was solved previously.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want to know if an issue has already been solved.
  • ✓When you need to recall how you did something in a previous session.
  • ✓When you want to continue work that was stopped in another conversation.

Example of what to ask your AI

“Search my memories for how we solved the route optimization problem last week.”

Ready-to-paste message

Use this skill to help me: https://github.com/thedotmack/claude-mem/blob/main/claude-mem-cursor/skills/mem-search/SKILL.md Read the SKILL.md file at that link and follow its instructions for my task.
How it works

The AI first looks for relevant information in its memories. If needed, it can retrieve deeper details or even the exact interactions that occurred before.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add thedotmack/claude-mem --skill mem-search

Or download just the file:

curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/thedotmack/claude-mem/main/claude-mem-cursor/skills/mem-search/SKILL.md -o SKILL.md
Technical content (original SKILL.md)

mem-search

Layered workflow. Do not dump full observations until IDs are filtered, and do not reach for raw tool bodies until the summaries came up short.

  1. search(query) — index with IDs
  2. timeline(anchor=ID) — nearby context
  3. get_observations(ids=[...]) — full details for those IDs only
  4. get_tool_uses(ids=[...]) — the ORIGINAL tool_input / tool_response for specific tool calls. Last resort: these are unsummarized and can run to thousands of tokens each.

Stamp platformSource as cursor or grok-bot on writes for this host. When reading, do not drop the other host unless asked.

If MCP is missing, run the install skill first (npx claude-mem install --ide <host>).

FAQ

What are 'IDs'?

IDs are like unique labels that the AI uses to identify and organize different pieces of information in its memory.

Why doesn't the AI show everything at once?

The AI shows information gradually to be more efficient and not overwhelm you with unnecessary details. It only shows more details if you ask or if the initial information isn't enough.

What are 'tool_input' and 'tool_response'?

These are the exact commands the AI used and the responses it received when interacting with other tools or systems. They are very technical details that are usually not needed.

Original description by the author

Use this when the user asks to search memory, "did we already solve this?", "how did we do X last time?", or wants work from previous sessions.
