thick-client

Performs security tests on installed computer programs. It checks how they store information and communicate, protecting against attacks.

What it does

This tool helps test the security of programs installed on your computer (called 'thick clients'). It checks how these programs store information, communicate with the internet, and protect themselves against unauthorized access.

When to use it

  • ✓When you want to check the security of a program you installed.
  • ✓To understand if a program stores important information securely.
  • ✓When analyzing how a program communicates with other systems.

Example of what to ask your AI

“I want to test the security of program X installed on my computer.”

Ready-to-paste message

Use this skill to help me: https://github.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills/blob/main/plugins/agentic-awesome-skills-claude/skills/thick-client/SKILL.md Read the SKILL.md file at that link and follow its instructions for my task.
How it works

The tool analyzes the program for weaknesses, such as unprotected saved information or easy ways to intercept communication. It does this by examining files, network connections, and how the program interacts with the operating system.

Installation

Easiest way: copy the skill link and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor asking it to follow the instructions.

In the terminal (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), in your project folder:

npx skills add sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills --skill thick-client

Or download just the file:

curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sickn33/agentic-awesome-skills/main/plugins/agentic-awesome-skills-claude/skills/thick-client/SKILL.md -o SKILL.md

⚠️ AUTHORIZED USE ONLY This skill is for educational purposes or authorized security assessments only. You must have explicit, written permission from the system owner before using this tool. Misuse of this tool is illegal and strictly prohibited.

Mandatory confirmation gate Before running any command that probes, exploits, changes, persists on, extracts data from, or attempts credential access against a target:

  1. Ask the user to state the exact target URL, IP, account, or resource.
  2. Ask the user to confirm written authorization and the permitted scope.
  3. Show the exact command(s) and explain their expected effect.
  4. Wait for explicit confirmation in the current conversation.

Without that confirmation, remain read-only and provide defensive guidance only. Prefer a sandbox, disposable VM, or controlled lab.

Thick Client Security Testing

When to Use

  • Assessing a desktop application's security posture.
  • Checking whether client-side trust decisions can be subverted.

Electron/Qt/.NET WinForms/WPF

(Windows)

Frida

□ .NET → dotnet-reverse;原生 → ida/ghidra;Electron → asar + js-reverse

Process Monitor / API Monitor 行为
Burp / mitmproxy 流量
dnSpy / IDA / Ghidra 逆向
Sysinternals Windows 面
asar / nexe 检测 Electron

参考

  • references/thick-client-checklist.md
  • ../dotnet-reverse/ ../ida-reverse/ ../js-reverse/ ../api-security/

  • Checklist?

Limitations

  • .NET/Java clients need framework-specific tooling.
  • Server-side enforcement gaps found client-side still need server confirmation.

FAQ

Do I need permission to use this tool?

Yes, you need written permission from the system owner to use it. Using it without permission is illegal.

What is a 'thick client'?

It's a program that you install and run directly on your computer, like many games or editing software.

Can this tool damage my computer?

It is designed for security testing and should be used carefully. It is recommended to use it in a controlled environment, such as a virtual machine.
